The problem with people

The problem with people - They're not perfect.

if you boil it all down, most problems people have are with other people. Directly or indirectly they are that force behind many daily hassles.

Of course you can not solve the people issue by isolating yourself from everybody else since in addition to them being the source of much pain, many more are the source of much happiness.

Often we expect others to be perfect or nearly perfect. AKA other-oriented perfectionism. We hold others to standards that are impossible to maintain, often behavior never maintained ourselves. This expectation is always your definition of "perfect" and yours is always the correct one.

Problems occur as this expectation seems to rise with the direct proportion of closeness of the relationship. The highest level is usually reserved for people you know best, one of the main reasons why there is so much frustration and pressure when dealing with those closest. They have the ability to disappoint our expectations the most. The problem with people is our others-appointed approach. Letting go brings freedom and contentment.

T. Merton said "The beginning of love is to let those we love be perfectly themselves, and not to twist them to fit our own image. Otherwise we love only the reflection of ourselves we find in them."

So any neurotic obsession with molding someone into your utopia version of themselves will only succeed in frustrating you and driving them away. There's always something toxic about expecting others to be perfect.

You will lift a huge burden the day you simply accept others for what they are and stop your crusade to try to change them. It's ourselves we imprison when we attempt to manipulate others to the point of change instead of simply wanting them for who they will become. When you discover beauty in imperfection it shows.

"Put on then, compassion, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience, bearing with one another and forgiving each other; as God has forgiven you, so you also must forgive." Colossians 3

I went with a group to Joplin this past week and it does look bad on television or the Internet. It's even worse to see it in person. It's so super easy to forget things when they are not directly affecting you or someone you know. And though this is physical destruction we all can see and that many respond to, there is in our own communities and cities unseen destruction of families, marriages, and lives. Maybe this is what God sees when he looks at our lives through His eyes. But through it all there is incredible Hope and promise that it can be rebuilt and restored - stronger than it was before. In Joplin and in our lives as well.

It was a strong reminder to me of how temporal our possessions are and how blessed I am to be alive.

A Leah & Nathan Update!

We were engaged on February 20th, giving us just a few whirlwind months to plan our August 15th wedding. I wore braces for the third time for most of those months, so we took our engagement pictures just three days before the wedding!

Those of you who know me, know I'm the opposite of a cowgirl. This was Nathan's photo idea.

And then there was the wedding- a beautiful, memorable day thanks especially to my parents and our siblings and friends who participated!
I know pictures have already been posted on here, so I'll just upload a few favorites.

Following the wedding, we went for a week at Nathan's parent's condo near Sarasota, Florida. Florida in August was a little hot, but it was great for water adventures!

This felt higher than it looked! It was so fun to see the fish in the water from all the way up here, and it was so quiet!Happy after our fun adventure!

The next day we went snorkeling. After watching Shark Week on Discovery earlier in the month, this made me a little panicked!

Here I am happily back in the boat taking pictures of Nathan's adventures. He is snorkeling around an old fort from the Spanish-American war. The fort was on an island, which has grown smaller over time.

I started my senior year of college the day after we got home from our honeymoon. I wish I would have taken pictures of us moving into our apartment. It definitely got worse before it got better! Here's our apartment currently:

I teach thirty cello and piano students, and one day a week, I babysit sweet little Sebastian. I've been watching him for a year (since he was four months) and it's been fun to see him grow up!

We love spending time with Isaac and Eva! Here Nathan and Isaac are trying out the new four-wheeler.

Nathan graduated in December with a decree in physics from the University of Illinois. I am so proud of him!

We went to Krista and George's in January. Grace and Nathan were having fun playing "I'll Fly Away." Grace was playing her open A string and singing!!

We bought a house a while ago that used to be a family home. It is near Nathan's family and will be a great home when it is done being completely remodeled. It is around 100 years old and hasn't had a lot of renovations since it was built. Here the plaster is gone and new windows are going in.

After going out East on a trip with my parents and two youngest siblings, I hopped on a plane in D.C. and headed back home. A day and half later I was on another flight to Sioux City for a wedding of a good friend. Somehow a few months ago they talked me into doing the wedding pictures. A friend of Nathan's from high school came along who is actually a photographer, unlike me :) All I have to say, is if you need wedding pictures, the dream team is ready.

I've never been the Hallmark card waiting to happen even if I try. But I absolutely love the Reynolds. They are unique and some of the most inspirational people I know of. If you ever had a chance to meet them, I'm sure you'd agree. Lauren did :)

Congratulations Anna and Aaron! Super happy for you both and it makes me so happy that I could be there on your exciting day!

As gorgeous as the bride was and as beautiful as the wedding was, my favorite part was watching the grandparents of Anna open up the dance floor with the Tennessee waltz. I don't think anyone could argue. It was precious.

FATHER SON CAMP OCTOBER 28-31 featuring Ray McElroy, former NFL football player, best selling Christian author Eric Ludy and Norm Wakefield from Spirit of Elijah Ministries. The 15th annual Father and Son Camp combines outdoor adventures and inspiring speakers with the goal of drawing fathers and sons closer to each other and closer to Jesus Christ. Area fathers and sons are encouraged to attend the camp. Last year this camp accommodated over six-hundred campers for the daily activities including paintball, canoe trips, kayak races, archery, clay pigeons, rifle range, hiking, biking and fishing. This year the new activities will include a three dimensional archery course and a military-type obstacle course. The public is welcome to attend Friday and Saturday evening to hear featured speakers Ray McElroy and Eric Ludy at 6:00pm. The Father and Son Camp began in 1995, when a then 3 year old Max Miller told his parents, Chris and Mary Miller of Oakland, that he wanted to go camping for his birthday with "no girls allowed." (Max has five sisters.) What began as an overnight campout for three dads and three sons has grown to become an annual event that accommodates more than six hundred fathers and sons. Max enjoys being a "country boy"

We have loved and enjoyed our five daughters, but when we had a son, Max, I said that we didn't know what we were missing! Sons are so different, but equally a blessing. As soon as the boys could walk, they wanted to go with their dad. I remember taking their carseat out to the combine when they were babies and they would ride around with Chris for hours. Whether it is camping, hunting, farming, playing with some ball, working on a project, or running an errand, they LOVE hanging out with their dad. I don't feel slighted at all because I know that they love me too. Especially when I have produced something good to eat. Wow, they do love to eat. We thank God for our sons and for another year of life. Happy Birthday boys!!

With inflation, Zippy the 2d cost a staggering price of 23 cents...

And a new generation enjoys the "fish project" that hopefully, will last longer that the previous.

Oh, and if you're wondering what is all over Madeline's eye, she had just gotten done applying my grandma's 12 hour lipstick to her eyes.
